Fishers Indiana Top 10 Places to Live

by O'Neil & Company Realtors

Kudos to Fishers Indiana! In a Money Magazine article released yesterday, Fishers ranked in the top ten best places to live in the country. Those of us who live, work, shop and socialize in Fishers have known this for years and the national recognition is quite an honor.

Making the list is not new to Fishers but the 2008 ranking is a testament to the city’s commitment to the school system, infrastructure and its community. Fishers was ranked 24th in 2005 and 33rd in 2006. No rankings were compiled in 2007 for communities with over 40,000 residents.

Monday Morning Trends

by O'Neil & Company Realtors

Good Monday Morning!

Snow!!! Our central Indiana weather is not predictable in early April!

There is some light beginning to flicker in our real estate market.  The number of homes for sale is declining significantly and there are all of a sudden many more people out there looking seriously.  Our historically low mortgage interest rates and  the very affordable price of homes out there is finally getting people to take a hard look at purchasing a home right now.

Has the market hit bottom?  Only time will tell. As I have said many times over that you will never know that we have hit bottom until we begin climbing up the other side.  I would think that there is a good chance that we have hit bottom and if we see homebuyer activity levels continue their increase we could quickly begin the climb out of this. Last week in Marion County 273 homes went under contract while Hamilton County saw 88 homes go under contract.

The chart below details the relationship between inventory and price in Carmel. Click for real estate price charts for Fishers, Noblesville and surrounding areas. Note: this is the median price and an early upward trend is evident as more expensive homes begin to sell. Most encouraging is the downward trend in inventory.

Have a great week!

10 St. Patrick's Day Facts

by O'Neil & Company Realtors

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Here are 10 interesting facts that you may not know about St. Patrick’s Day. Have a safe holiday!

  1. St. Patrick's given name was Maewyn Succat and he was born in Britain around 385 AD. At age 16 he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his 6 years as a slave he turned to religion for solace. He escaped slavery and made his way to Gaul where he changed his name to Patrick and studied in the monastery.
  2. St. Patrick's celebrations were originally religious festivals. Prior to the mid 1970’s, Irish law prohibited pubs from being open on St. Patrick's Day.
  3. During the mid 90’s, the Irish government began promoting the holiday in an effort to drive more tourism to their country.
  4. In the United States, it's customary to wear green on St. Patrick's Day. But in Ireland the color was long considered to be unlucky.
  5. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 34 million United States residents claim Irish ancestry. This number represents nearly ten times the entire population of Ireland which stands at 3.9 million. Among U.S. ethnic groups, the number of Irish-Americans in theU.S. is second only to the number of German-Americans.
  6. Today New York's St. Patrick's Day parade is the longest running civilian parade in the world. This year nearly three million spectators are expected to watch the spectacle and some 150,000 participants plan to march.
  7. Guinness stout, first brewed by Arthur Guinness in Dublin, Ireland, in 1759, has become synonymous with Ireland, Irish bars and St. Patrick’s Day. According to the company's web site, 1.9 billion pints of Guinness are consumed around the world every year. It is estimated that 13 million pints of Guinness will be poured today, on St. Patrick’s Day.
  8. The Guinness Book of World Records was commissioned by the managing director (CEO) of Guinness Brewery in 1951 in order to settle pub disputes in Ireland. Originally intended as a marketing piece for the pubs, 1,000 copies of the 198 page book were given away in 1952. Today, the book itself holds the record for best selling copyrighted series of all-time.
  9. Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.
  10. One estimate suggests that there are about 10 000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover.

May your blessings outnumber

The shamrocks that grow,

And may trouble avoid you

Wherever you go.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard Says He'll Spend Stimulus Money Wisely

by O'Neil & Company Realtors

CNN spent a few days last week in downtown Carmel interviewing residents about the economy, their spending and their attitudes. Most people have concerns but were optimistic. The City of Carmel is making progress, progress that is creating jobs, spending money and is long term in its vision.

"Government should be investing in infrastructure," the Carmel mayor said to CNN "That is what government is meant to do. It creates long-term value. I think the stimulus plan is a good one." The city has plans for infrastructure, more round-a-bouts and and smoother traffic flows. These items not only reduce accidents and speed up travel times but also reduce gas, noise and emmissions.

Carmel is becoming a city of the future. The city is moving full speed ahead despite the economy.
